The Interstellar Corporations make up the third leg of leadership within the Galaxy. The corporations do what The Church and the System Lords cannot; they run the economy. The Interstellar Corporations all have their headquarters on one system or another, and as such, many of them can be found to lean more heavily towards the System they call home, but they are all in the business for profit. The Church and the System Lords have the power to break up or dismantle a corporation, and have even done it a few times, but the Corporations, as a whole, have the ability to bankrupt a System, and at least make things difficult for The Church.
The range of corporations are just as great in this age as they were in the 20th Century. They have business models that connect to all aspects of life, from services to manufacturing to farming, if there is a job to be done, then there is a corp to fill it. Most of the Corporations lease their land and claims from the System Lords that they work with, but a few Corporations have grown so big, that they now possess their own Systems, and use them as their bases of operation. The Church never allows a Corporation to own a System that could become self-sufficient, instead they are relegated to owning Systems that are at best major sources of resources, or desolate systems that are used as research and testing centers.Noteworthy Corporations
