A Heaven’s Gate is a large metallic ring roughly 100 miles in diameter. There are over one hundred of them that have been discovered so far, and each is perfectly identical to the others. It is speculated that many more exist, but The Holy Roman Church is the only group that can travel through the Gate Space contained beyond the Gates to discover them.
A Heaven’s Gate is not noteworthy so much for its size or its uniformity, but for what it does: It opens a hole to another dimension. The other dimension it opens up into does not conform to the measurement of distance the same way as our dimension does. The dimension is normally referred to as Gate Space, but it is officially called the Foyer of Heaven.
It is through the network of Heaven’s Gates that interstellar space travel is possible, with one incredibly significant caveat; only Gatekeepers can travel through Gate Space while conscious. Any non-Gatekeeper who remains conscious while in Gate Space is driven irrevocably insane, a condition referred to as Awestruck. The only way for non-gatekeepers to travel through the Gates is in Stasis Pods.
